Is Your Candidate Experience up to Par?

0

Sara Pollock | January 2019  |  Every interaction a candidate has with your company affects their opinion of your organization. In fact, 78 percent of candidates see the candidate experience as “an indicator of how a company values its people,” according to CareerBuilder.

Candidates approach every touchpoint — including social media posts, promotional emails, and conversations with past and present employees — as a chance to learn more about your company. Given that every interaction has so much power, the way your company portrays itself really matters. During the candidate experience, applicants hope to validate their perceptions of your company. They want the recruiting process to be a glimpse into the day-to-day life of the organization they may soon join.

With that in mind, you need to be sure your candidate experience is meeting job seekers’ needs. Ask yourself these questions to determine whether or not your candidate experience is up to par:

1. Are Your Job Descriptions Accurate?

Job seekers peruse the open job listings on your website to see where they could fit in. Do your candidates see generic posts that any person on the street could fill, or do they see position-specific requirements, clear goals pertaining to the job, and comprehensive lists of the responsibilities they would be expected to fulfill?

Your job descriptions are one of your first chances to make a good impression on a new candidate, so you want to make sure they accurately represent the open positions at your organization. Go above and beyond by including in your job descriptions the information candidates are really curious about, such as company mission, organizational culture, and benefits packages.

2. Does Your Candidate Experience Fit Your Company Culture?

During the recruiting process, candidates should get a taste of what the culture is like inside your organization. The same values that drive your internal culture should drive your candidate experience.

Does your company value personal growth? Ask candidate where they’d like to be within your company in the next five years, and tell them about your career development programs and related benefits. Is your company collaborative? Invite the candidate to meet with multiple team members to demonstrate how you emphasize team work.

3. Is Your Recruiting Process Mobile-Friendly?

Everyone is on their phone — why isn’t your recruiting process? Forty-three percent of traffic to career pages comes from mobile devices, according to CareerBuilder. Start your candidates off with convenience: Give them a mobile-friendly career site.

4. Do You Follow Up With Your Candidates?

Nobody likes to be the bearer of bad news, but you owe it to your candidates — and your company’s reputation — to properly inform them of their status in the recruiting process. If you have promising candidates who will not be receiving job offers, assure them the right position will come along soon. Encourage all candidates to keep watching your careers page. Inform declined applicants why they will not be receiving the position and what they could do better next time. By simply keeping candidates updated, you make them 3.5 times more likely to apply to your company again in the future.

5. Have You Asked for Feedback?

Your employees are one of your best assets when it comes to improving the candidate experience. Ask new hires for their feedback on the recruiting process and how you could make it even better. Questions like “Now that you have been here for a month, do you feel the job description accurately represented the position you are now in?” and “Were there any parts of your candidate experience that you wish were more streamlined?” can help you uncover extremely valuable insights you couldn’t get on your own.

If you plan to invest in revamping your candidate experience in 2019 but aren’t sure how to, start with these five questions. Also, be sure to look at your recruiting process from the candidate’s perspective. What works best for the company may not be best for the candidate.

How Survive the Office Holiday Party When You’re an Introvert

0

Matthew Kosinski | December 2018 | It’s not that you don’t like your coworkers. In fact, you really enjoy working with them. You like stopping to chat in the hallways, or eating lunch with a small group of your colleagues every once in a while.

But you’re an introvert, which means social interactions can be exhausting for you, rather than invigorating. You’re not looking forward to toughing it out at the office holiday party yet again.

Fret not. While big social gatherings may not be your bag, there is a way to make it out alive. Heck, you might even end up enjoying yourself, as long as you follow these tips from Simply Be’s new infographic:

An introvert's guide to office parties_reduced

Psychometric Tests

0

Psychometric tests have become a common part of recruitment.  There’s no time to waste in disliking them – they are here to stay for the foreseeable future.  The good news?  You can learn to handle them.  Not only that, but you can learn to master them.

It does take practice – this is a ‘test’ after all.  So to make sure you are prepared as you can be here are three top tips to ensure they don’t get the better of you.

1. The Test

When you are asked to take a test as part of a recruitment process the first thing you should do is figure out what type of test it is.  This will greatly influence how you practice for it.  Is it numerical, verbal, personality?  It is online or paper-based?  Will you have to take it under ‘test conditions’ (e.g. supervised) or can you do it on your own at home?  Which test provider are the using?  Are there practice tests available with the provider?

Do your research and then plan accordingly. You may find you’ve done one of these tests before – or you may find it is completely new.  Some tests – e.g. personality – can’t be practiced but it is still worth doing some research into the purpose and structure of the test.

You are far better placed to handle a test if you understand whyyou are doing it and what you can expect on the day.

2. Practice

Once you’ve figured out what the test is and what to expect, map out the appropriate amount of time to prepare for it.  Many people fail at this hurdle because they don’t dedicate enough time to prepare.

You would prep for a phone interview, a presentation, face-to-face interview or exam – and a psychometric test is an equally big part of the recruitment process.  You will need to practice and so ensure you put time aside to do this.

The more you do, the easier it will get.  Don’t be surprised if you don’t pass first time – they are designed to be hard and the pass mark is often set at a very high level if you are applying for particularly competitive roles.  Don’t be discouraged; ensure you set aside more time in future to practice.

Here are some sites where you can practice – note that some of them may charge you:

You will also find a number of books that you can buy which allow you to practice the types of questions you’ll face (although in paper format).  When the day finally comes to take the test, make sure you are as prepared as you can be.

Online

If you are taking the test online at home, don’t leave it till the last minute.  Check the deadline and ensure you are planning to take it at least a day in advance.  You never know what can go wrong at the last minute and you’ll be surprised by the number of the recruiters that won’t accept excuses for late submission.

Make sure you have a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed for the required time period.   No phones, house-mates, dogs, heavy traffic nearby.  Ensure you the computer you use is reliable and has the appropriate browser that you need.  Check beforehand what you’ll need (e.g. a calculator, spare paper, pen) so that you are ready to begin as soon as the test starts.

Supervised

If you are taking the test under supervised conditions – either online or with paper – then you will most likely be sent a date and time for this.  As you would with exams, give yourself plenty of time to get there.  You don’t want to be in a flap when you arrive.  Check beforehand if you need to bring anything (e.g. pen, paper, calculator) – some Assessment Centres require you to bring your own laptop on the day.

And finally…

Regardless of where, when and how – try to relax.  Take a deep breath and do the best that you can.  Work quickly but methodically.   If you are finding one question to be challenging, move on if you can.  You can rest assured that no one else is finding the test ‘easy’ and by taking it you are one step closer to mastering them.

3 Tips for Millennials Working With Gen. X Bosses

0
Maria Onzain | November 2018

According to the Pew Research Center, millennials are the largest generation in the US labor force. Unfortunately, they don’t always get along with the other generations in the workforce.

This is especially true in the case of relationships between millennials and Gen. X-ers, who are often millennials’ bosses. As Yvette Maurice writes for Open Colleges, millennials and Gen. X-ers often hold contrasting attitudes toward work and prefer incompatible forms of communication, which can lead to many workplace conflicts.

As John McDermott writes for MEL Magazine, Gen. X-ers often see millennials as entitled and lazy. Some Gen. X-ers even accuse millennials of depressing wages by working more hours for less money.

McDermott notes that millennials came of age during the Great Recession. As a result, they’ve battled high unemployment rates, underemployment, lower salaries, and unfavorable working conditions for much of their professional lives.

Understanding where both sides are coming from is the first step in fixing conflicts between them and ensuring everyone gets along in the office.

For millennials who want to establish happy, healthy relationships with their Gen. X bosses, it’s a good idea to follow these three tips:

1. Communicate Wisely

Communication styles are a common source of conflict between millennials and Gen. X-ers. Millennials feel very comfortable using several different communication platforms all at once. In comparison, Gen. X-ers generally prefer to talk in person. Millennials think their Gen. X bosses waste too much time chatting in meetings, while Gen. X-ers consider the younger generation’s communication style too cold and unproductive.

In reality, both communication styles are perfectly acceptable and can be complementary to each other. It’s all about choosing the most appropriate method for each specific occasion.

For example, if you need to keep a record of your conversation or share important documents, email is the way to go. If you need real-time feedback, you can always follow up your email with a face-to-face conversation. Don’t be shy. Get up and go to your boss’s desk. When this is not possible, pick up the phone for a productive call, instead of messaging back and forth.

2. Understand What Your Boss Means by ‘Workplace Flexibility’

While both millennials and Gen. X-ers are fans of workplace flexibility, they often have very different ideas of what “flexibility” means.

Millennials may be known as the flexible generation, but it was actually Gen. X-ers who really pioneered the concept of work/life balance. They broke the traditional 9-to-5 work schedule in search of more harmonious lives.

Gen. X-ers may appreciate flexible start and end times or the option to work from home part-time, but millennials take the idea of workplace flexibility to a new level. This generation’s concept of flexibility includes everything from fun company cultures and cool office amenities to 100 percent remote work schedules.

To successfully work together, the two generations need to understand and respect each other’s flexibility preferences. While this means your Gen. X boss should accommodate your flexibility needs to some degree, it also means you have to adjust your work style to fit in with the rest of the team.

3. Learn From Each Other

Millennials were born into a world of information overload and advanced technology, so it is very easy for them to pick up new tech tools. In contrast, Gen. X-ers have had to rapidly adapt to a changing business environment, and keeping up with the latest tech trends is less natural for them. As a millennial, you can help close the digital skills divide by helping your Gen. X boss acquire some new technology skills.

While Gen. X-ers will certainly see the advantages of working with the fast-learning millennials, millennials have much to gain from their more experienced Gen. X bosses as well.

There is so much Gen. X-ers can teach millennials. For instance, millennials can learn how to gain credibility within the organization by observing how Gen. X-ers navigate the company’s political climate. Millennials can also learn from Gen. X-ers about emotional intelligence, a skill of every true leader.

In spite of all their differences, Gen. X-ers and millennials do have a lot in common, and acknowledging these shared traits will lead to better, more productive relationships between workers of these generations.

Compared to older generations, millennials and Gen. X-ers are quick decision-makers. Even though they may express themselves in different ways, members of each generation are ambitious and hard-working. Millennials and Gen. X-ers also prioritize work/life balance over working long hours for higher pay.

When millennials and Gen. X-ers learn to work with rather than against one another, everyone benefits. Millennials can learn new skills from their Gen. X bosses, Gen. X-ers can learn new work strategies from their millennial employees, and the overall business will thrive.

How to Get Unstuck and Achieve Your Personal Goals

0

Michele Mavi | November 2018 | Setting personal goals is easy — but sticking to them can be tricky business. Distractions, instant gratifications, and a calendar of obligations can all derail your plans.

When you find yourself stuck on the path to your goals, getting yourself moving in the right direction again can seem like a bigger hurdle than actually achieving your goals — but it’s not impossible. Here are four simple things you can do to stay focused and keep moving toward your personal goals:

1. Set Goals You Truly Desire

We often make decisions based on factors other than our desires. It is true that you will always have obligations, but a personal goal should be something you want for yourself. If you don’t deeply desire to achieve your goal, you will likely never achieve.

You may think every goal is naturally a desire, but that is not always the case. Many of us — without even realizing it — set goals not because we want to achieve them, but because we want to please other people or conform to certain image others have of us.

If you’re struggling to motivate yourself to work toward your goal, check in with your level of desire. Make sure your goal is something you truly want.

2. Look to the Future

Motivation, which is connected to your emotional state, is fleeting. It comes and goes. While feelings are certainly valid, you can’t be ruled by them. Imagine what would happen if you didn’t show up for work every time you simply didn’t feel like going?

To stay in touch with your motivation, even when it is waning, fast forward to the future. Ask yourself: Whom do I want to become? Then, focus on the habits, lifestyles and achievements you’ll need to become that person. This should help pull you out of your present-day rut.

3. Acknowledge Your Fears

While it is natural to want to suppress the negative thoughts you feel, it’s a better idea to take a clear look at them. Ignoring your fears and limiting beliefs about yourself will only get you so far.

Instead, take time to really understand yourself. That way, you can better prepare yourself to deal with the negative thoughts that are holding you back. Everyone who has ever achieved anything has had to overcome fears and insecurities in the process.

4. Do What Needs Doing

Sometimes you just have to go through the motions to get your motivation back, like dragging yourself to the gym even when you don’t feel like going.

Focus on the doing of the thing, not the way it feels. Nine times out of 10, you’ll be glad you did. Start small — you don’t have to try running for a whole hour on your first day back in the gym. The action is always better than inaction when you know what you have to do. Sometimes you have to just do it.
